Kristine Tjøgsen - Between Trees cover

Aurora Records is pleased to present the upcoming double album Between Trees with selected works by Kristine Tjøgersen, one of the Norway’s most promising and sought-after composers. The release will be available as double vinyl, CD and on streaming services June 7th in 2024, and is Tjøgersen’s first album on Aurora Records. With a growing demand and international attention for this composer, the time is right to release her first portrait album.

The album is a comprehensive collection of award-winning works and some of Europe’s leading performers. The album opens with the title piece Between Trees performed by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, a piece that had its world premiere in October 2021 and that won the International Rostrum of Composers in Palermo in 2022. Tjøgersen calls the piece ”chamber music for orchestra” and takes listeners on a musical excursion into the forest. The album also features the leading German contemporary music ensemble Recherche. They perform Seafloor Dawn Chorus (2018) - a sonic underwater environment inspired by field recordings of singing fish on the Great Barrier Reef. Other tracks include ensembles where the composer herself is a member, with Tøyen Fil and Klafferi and Ensemble neoN, collaborations with Jenny Hval and and Marcus Weiss, and solo pieces with the renowned violinist Marco Fusi.

Nature in motion and process is often reflected in her works, and collaboration with researchers and biologists is for her a source of new sound and scenic ideas that allows her to incorporate organic forms into the music. As Tjøgersen puts it, “I like to magnify my ears enormously – like a microscope looking for hidden sounds. With this record I hope to create a unique space for listening and consideration; a miniature world, where you can marvel at the proportions of nature. By giving nature a voice in the concert hall, I want the audience to get to know valuable forms of life, and to raise awareness of what can be lost if humans continue to change nature.”

- Kristine Tjøgersen

”Kristine Tjøgersen is this year’s winner of the Arne Nordheim music prize, and the last concert at the Ultima Festival was dedicated to her playful musical universe. There is a directness of its own in Tjøgersen’s music. The music is characterized by playful precision and a remarkable clarity, preferably with nature and its sounds as a starting point... A remarkable wonder of nature”

- Aksel Dalmo Tollåli - Aftenposten (2020)

Kristine Tjøgersen (b. 1982) holds an MA in composition from Anton Bruckner Universität in Austria, where she studied with Carola Bauckholt, and an MA in clarinet from the Norwegian Academy of Music, where she studied with Hans Christian Bræin.

Her compositional practice is characterized by curiosity, imagination, humor and precision. Through her work, she creates unexpected auditory situations through playing with tradition. She has a special interest in the interplay between the visual and the auditory and how they affect each other.

Her works have been performed by Ensemble Recherche, Klangforum Wien, Arditti Quartet, Pinquins, SWR and WDR Symphonieorchester, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Münchener Philharmonic, and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as at festivals such as ECLAT, Ultraschall, Wien Modern, Tectonics, Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik, and Ultima.

In 2019–20, Tjøgersen was a fellow at Akademie der Künste in Berlin, and in 2020 she received Norway’s Arne Nordheim Composer Prize, as well as the Pauline Hall Prize for her orchestra piece Bioluminescence. In 2021, she was awarded “Work of the Year” from the Norwegian Society of Composers for her Piano Concerto. In 2022, she won the International Rostrum of Composers in Palermo, and in 2023 she was the winner of Coup de Coeur des Jeunes Mélomanes from Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco for her orchestra work Between Trees.
